Here’s a sweet mourning ring hallmarked for Birmingham 1870. It’s set with a central oval carved onyx depicting a forget-me-not, a popular symbol during the 19th century that symbolises grief at the loss of a loved one.
This ring is 12-carat gold, which was introduced as a gold standard in England in 1853, along with nine-carat and 15-carat. It soon soon dropped out of use, unlike the other two.
The shoulders have pretty hand engraving and the onyx rests in a delicate crown-like setting.
